With Luciano Berio the new music opens itself up to the temptations of the folk and traditional cultures.
It is not unlikely that Caty Berberian, consummate interpreter of the most varied vocal repertoires,
stimulated this leader of the avant-garde to escape from the grip of linguistic radicalism.
The Folk Songs for voice and instrumental ensemble testify to the musician's curiosity as she ranges from
Armenia to Sicily, from Sardinia to America, to Azerbaidzhan, with a manipulative skill and an acoustic
ear which is particularly sensitive to the techniques of harmonisation which enhance the characteristics
of the diverse ethnic influences. The two Canzoni popolari (Popular Songs)for voice and pianoforte
re-evoke ancient medieval melodies and preserve an archaic colour which is in some way close to the
eighties generation; all of which provides reconfirmation that Berio, who grew up amidst the speculative
research of the Darmstadt school and of electronic music, has also heeded the lesson of his first teacher,
Giorgio Federico Ghedini. Alongside Berio is Prokofiev's Overture on Jewish themes Op.34, a piece of lively
rhythmic profiles, evidently included in this CD for its explicit ethnic connotation.
The choice of the programme bears witness to the diligence and musical intelligence of Donella Del Monaco,
a performer who is particularly receptive to unusual repertoires, and one in whom interest for
contemporary and traditional music coexists. (Mario Messinis).
