Ever since I was a child I have come into contact with many Veneto folk songs which provided the musical background to parties, trips in the mountains and moments of joyous conviviality. These songs were humble and naive, yet at the same time genuine and contained great pages of the history of the Veneto people. Collecting them and performing them, even under a revisited musical guise, has been a precious experience: it has been like reliving the history of our grandparents and great grandparents, in search of a world which was lost with them.
The songs are for the most part from the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th Centuries, a period which in Veneto history corresponds to the time when the region was annexed to the new Kingdom of Italy up until the First World War. They recapture the atmosphere and social drama of the Veneto in that troubled period. The striking phenomenon of this historical moment is the way people were uprooted from the countryside through emigration and industrialisation and the accompanying and widespread pauperism.
