FRAGMENTS 1975-2002 |
 |
| |
Fragments for me is like an album of memories from 1975 to 2002.
Just as memories tell a story, so these pieces narrate "my" story through
music; they display - unusually for a singer - various contrasting musical
genres, ranging from ancient music, opera and song, to contemporary music
and progressive rock.
In 1974 I published "Opus Avantra -Introspezione", followed by the single*
with the two pieces "Flowers on pride" and "Allemanda", also with the group
Opus Avantra. Over the years these records have been much appreciated by
collectors all over the world for the way they blended various musical
genres, from rock to classical.
The single* "Flowers on pride " and "Allemanda" was never republished,
unlike the other records with the group Opus Avantra, which were republished
many times. In this edition these pieces are offered with a slight remake - however,
admirers can find the original versions of the pieces collected on a CD
obtainable through my Internet site (donelladelmonaco.com).
The pieces "De Antequera", "Je moeur de revoir" and "Ma belle" date
from a few years later (1976/77/78), and were part of a programme for
guitar and vocals which I performed at numerous concerts. I particularly
remember a performance for the Radio Suedeutsche Rundfunk in Stuttgart
on the suggestion of the great conductor Sergiu Chelibidache.
"Thorn birds theme", "Banana Boat" and "Tico -Tico" are part of an attempt,
which I decided not to continue with, at a concert programme dedicated to
the great songs, in a personal version. I nonetheless enjoyed "playing"
with these famous pieces and on some occasions I offered them as encores.
I subsequently chose not to continue along this path as I preferred music
which was the result of personal research and arrangements, or music by
"transversal" composers who link several musical trends together - like,
for example, the "Folk songs " of Luciano Berio or the "Chansons" of Erik Satie.
The only piece current to 2001 is "Chant et deport", an arrangement of a song
by a Provençal poet, whose inviting melody transports us to the world of courtly love.
"L'innamurata" is a live piece which was part of a concert held at the Municipal
Theatre in Treviso in 1999 under the title "Incanto Mediterraneo"
(Mediterranean Enchantment). It is an ancient popular melody from Apulia
revisited in a contemporary key.
"Fragments" also includes two poems written by my father Marcello Del Monaco:
the first is entitled "La Musica" and is recited by the author; the second is
dedicated to his brother, the great tenor Mario Del
Monaco, who recites it himself.
This album of memories was created to mark a special date: my 27 years
in music and concerts.
27 is a special number, being 3 to the power three, and for me it will be
a bit like pulling in the lines and, after so much music, stopping to reflect.
