MARCELLO DEL MONACO |

| |
Born in Florence in 1919 in a family with an illustrious artistic tradition (his mother was the cousin of the actor Fosco Giachetti , an aunt married Enrico Caruso, another uncle was the organist at the Church of Santa Maria Novella in Florence).
A cultivated man with many different interests, he attended the Pesaro Conservatory (whose Director was Zandonai) where he studied composition and singing with Maestro Melocchi (the same Maestro as his brother Mario and the soprano Tebaldi). He obtained a teaching degree and won the Public concorso to become a Primary School Headmaster, a profession which he carried out for the whole of his life, also directing the Centre for Artistic Education in the Province of Treviso. The Primary School in Varago in the Province of Treviso was named after him, in recognition of his work. Even while carrying out his profession he dedicated himself passionately, in his free time, to training opera singers, being internationally renowned for his ability.
He had a great number of Italian and overseas students, of whom we will name but a few here: Silvano Carroli, Corneliu Murgu, Gianfranco Cecchele, Mairizio Frusoni, Nicola Martinucci, Giuseppe Giacomini, Angelo Mori, Bruno Sebastian, Vincenzo Bello, Luigi Colmagro,
Amedeo Zambon, Lorenzo Gaetani, Robert Kern, Josella Ligi, Rita Lantieri and Maria Luisa Nave. He was called upon to be a member of numerous juries for international operatic competitions (Maria Canals in Barcellona, Viotti in Vercelli, etc.) and was decorated with the "Viotti d'oro" award. As a poet he won first prize at the "Silvano Pandozy" Competition in 1958 and a collection of his poems was published, obtaining favourable judgements from well-known critics and scholars including Salvatore Quasimodo, Achille Campanile, Francesco Flora and Mario Ramons. He published "Pensieri" (Thoughts), edited by Nobili, Pesaro; "Come oggi e ieri" (Like Today and Yesterday), edited by Cappelli, Bologna; "E l'albero si sfoglia" (And the Tree Sheds its Leaves) edited by Amicucci, Padova. The brief critical note for "Come oggi e ieri" sums up his whole literary output: "Non di ermetismo si deve parlare, ma di musicalità" ("Not of Hermeticism should one speak but of musicality").
